Our Story
Founded in 2012 with our first site Tokyo Cheapo, our practical and friendly editorial style has won over the hearts of travellers and foreign residents alike to quickly become the most popular English language website about Tokyo. Since then we’ve launched 3 more websites – London Cheapo, Japan Cheapo, and Hong Kong Cheapo. Traffic on our network first exceeded 2 million page views per month in 2019.

How We Work – Flexible, Remote, Global
We’ve been a remote-first company from day one. We believe our team should be able to work wherever and whenever they get their best work done. Our team is based in a number of cities and spread across three continents. We’re all skilled at communicating and collaborating remotely – and we enjoy working this way.

Activities, Office Parties and Retreats
In cities where we have a major presence (Tokyo and London) we meet up for regular team dinners and activities. We also aim to gather the team twice per year in different locations around the world for a team retreat – a chance to spend some quality time together. We also like to throw a party every year for our anniversary at our office in Nogizaka.

We don’t want you to waste your time and we don’t ever want you to do anything for show. Nor do we set unnecessarily tight deadlines or micro-manage. We’re always looking for ways of getting the best results from the least work and we use tech and tools to help our team work smarter.

We’ve based our business on creating a useful and loved series of websites and we want you to be proud of the work you do with us. We encourage sustainable travel, including carbon footprints in our transport recommendations, sustainability notes in our food guides and offering alternatives to animal cafes whenever we spot them.
🦄 Having Fun
An important part of our work is selecting the correct cat/doge gif for internal communications – either is fine, but of course some animals are more equal than others.
